Short description : In educational settings, emotional violence is often perpetrated by teachers and educational professionals against children and young people. Research into this phenomenon is highly relevant, as the experience of emotional violence can have far-reaching effects on children and young people. The Child Protection Association's campaign "Violence is more than you think" demonstrates the topicality and explosive nature of the issue, as well as the ambiguity regarding the question of who has the authority to interpret what constitutes a form of violence in educational settings.
To date, there are hardly any established theoretical definitions of the phenomenon of emotionalviolence. The isolated debates in the educational and social science discourse have not yet been systematically related to one another. This desideratum is to be addressed by the network proposed here. The interdisciplinary network is intended to help work out various dimensions of the phenomenon of psychological violence and contribute to the development of a theory. By incorporating different theoretical and methodological approaches, we hope to reveal previously unknown areas of tension. Three focal points will be examined: 1. (Existing) normative positionings, 2. forms of psychological violence and 3. professional theoretical perspectives (and classifications).
The network, which is based in the educational sciences, strives for an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore, researchers from the fields of social work, social psychology, law, social philosophy, special education, school education and sociology are involved. The members of the network have research experience on pemotional violence or related topics. Through various formats, e.g. joint evaluations of existing data sets in small groups and exchanges with (inter)national experts, the members of the network aim to gain new insights on both a theoretical and empirical level.
