SchulAQ – Dual Teacher Training Option for Professionals with Work Experience
SchulAQ is of interest to individuals with a Bachelor of Engineering (HAW / BA) and professional experience, as well as professionally qualified individuals with advanced vocational training—such as a technician or master craftsman certification in an industrial-technical department—who are looking to take the next step in their careers and transition from the corporate sector to vocational schools. SchulAQ is a dual study program in which students complete the “Teacher Training – Vocational Schools” program part-time at TU Dresden. At the same time, they are employed as trainee teaching assistants in the Saxon school system. The program culminates in the First State Examination for Teacher Training – Vocational Schools.

“Teacher Training – Vocational Schools” Program
The “Teacher Training – Vocational Schools” program is completed on a part-time basis at TU Dresden. The duration of study is typically 9–11 semesters, depending on credits transferred from professional advancement training. This program culminates in the First State Examination for Teacher Training – Vocational Schools, which in turn is a prerequisite for the teaching internship in Teacher Training – Vocational Schools in Saxony.
As part of this program track, students can major in one of six primary departments. These primary departments must be combined with a secondary subject or a second field of study. Possible primary departments include:
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
- Color Technology, Interior Design, and Surface Technology
- Wood Technology
- Chemical Engineering
- Metallurgy and Mechanical Engineering
Certain combination restrictions apply, which are listed in the Student Information System (SINS).
To ensure that the transition into university studies—which is often fraught with challenges—goes as smoothly as possible, school assistants in training receive intensive support and guidance throughout the process. Among other things, subject-specific preparatory courses are available starting on the first day of employment (early August).
- Online preparatory courses in mathematics, physics, and computer science at TU Dresden
- In-person bridge courses to prepare students for engineering curriculum content
Even beyond the initial transition to university, students receive support through the following formats, among others
- Support with academic planning
- Time and study management
- Regular check-in meetings
- Introduction to academic research
- Support during the final exam phase
Work as a school assistant in training
Work as a school assistant in vocational training is carried out at a vocational school in Saxony and includes, in addition to supporting teachers in the classroom, conducting technology-assisted lessons together with the teacher, preparing lessons, and assisting the school administration with administrative and maintenance tasks. All internships required as part of the degree program can be completed as part of the work as a school assistant at the vocational school centers.

Applications for a position as a school assistant in vocational training are submitted directly to the vocational schools in Saxony that are advertising a position. Current job postings are published on the Saxony Career Portal as they become available. Appointment as a SchulAQ in the Saxon school system is handled by the State Office for Schools and Education.
