Interview with Benjamin Ullrich
As a rule, you will then move to a company for twelve months after the end of the fourth semester to learn the practical skills of a profession in your chosen Department. At the end or after completing your internship, you can take an external examination at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) or the Chamber of Crafts and obtain a qualification as a skilled worker.
There are now several study models in Germany for recruiting teachers in the vocational-technical field. KAtLA, SchulAQ and, since 2019, the OptLA project have been in existence for a few years. Three study models in Saxony that were launched by TU Dresden.
Benjamin Ullrich is the contact person for the KAtLA study option. In the following interview, he answers some important questions.
- Entry into the teaching profession without professional experience or training
- One-year training with a HWK or IHK qualification as part of the degree course
"Professional experience is a good prerequisite for teachers in technical departments. The TechLA+ study option offers first-year students who want to start studying to become a technical teacher directly after graduating from high school the opportunity to integrate vocational training into their studies. Twelve months of training in a company are completed with a skilled worker examination. The standard period of study is automatically extended by one year."
"The Abitur or general higher education entrance qualification is a prerequisite for admission to the teacher training course. You should also have an interest in technical teaching, especially in your chosen Department, and be keen to gain practical experience."
"The course includes an internship year with an optional degree as a skilled worker and an extended standard period of study of two semesters. In the traditional degree course, professional experience must be proven by a qualification as a skilled worker or a self-organized twelve-month relevant internship."
