From 21 to 23 June 2022, the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig will host the international conference "Beten und gesehen werden. Social Functions of Late Medieval Devotional Practices in Central European Comparison" in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the German Historical Institute Warsaw and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

From 21 to 23 June 2022, the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig will host the international conference "Beten und gesehen werden. Social Functions of Late Medieval Devotional Practices in Central European Comparison" in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the German Historical Institute Warsaw and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
The religious dimension of devotional practices is obvious. Devotional practices were intended to secure personal salvation and that of relatives; existence in the afterlife was to be made possible and facilitated in this way. Religious devotional practices, however, also had an inner-worldly dimension. Devotional practices, whether individual or collective, served to build identity, they conferred prestige, could illustrate social and societal status and, last but not least, had economic significance. The functioning of communities - in a family, in brotherhoods, in a church community, in a city - was guaranteed, structured and also simplified by devotional practices.
The aim of the conference is to take a comparative look at concrete devotional practices in the late Middle Ages in Central Europe. In a collective context, this concerns, for example, the actions of brotherhoods, donations and endowments, works of piety, processions or pilgrimages. Forms of private devotion - personal prayer, individual veneration of relics, collecting devotional objects or devotional reading - are of greater interest to the individual.
In previous research, the devotional practices mentioned - also due to the state of the sources - have preferably been considered for the clerical and secular elites. However, the aim of the conference is not to examine such devotional practices for popes, bishops, emperors, kings, princes and other "greats". Instead, it will attempt to reconstruct the devotional practices of people in the cities and in the countryside who were often known only by name and who often remained anonymous. It will thus be about cultural practices that were shared by broad sections of the population, often not the subject of scholastic-university elites.
