In the course of the cultural-scientific corporeal turn and the associated sensory turn, the role of the human body and sensory experiences has been the focus of attention of both scholars and the general public in recent decades. The period of the Middle Ages in particular, with its rich material culture, is increasingly being interdisciplinarily examined for phenomena of sensual experience. The aim of the international conference of the Heidelberg Research Centre "Monasteries in the High Middle Ages" is to examine these aspects specifically in the monastic and regular canonical context of the Middle Ages:
How were sensual experiences perceived, shaped, evoked, interpreted and/or instrumentalised in religious communities? Which visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile and synaesthetic experiences - be they real or imagined - characterise the (experience of) spirituality in the monastery? To what extent were these reflected, interpreted and specifically incorporated into the service of lived spirituality by medieval religionists?
