Choice between two profile lines:

• English Course: Choice from the English-language range of social, political, economic and cultural studies courses at the Faculty of Global Engagement, Department of Global Studies. It is also possible to attend Japanese courses and courses in other foreign languages.
• Japanese Course: Choice of courses offered by the Japanese Studies Center for International Students. The courses offer insights into Japanese culture, history and language and include Japanese courses, seminars on Japanese history and culture as well as events on cultural techniques (calligraphy, tea ceremonies, etc.).

In addition, further courses can be taken at the Department of Global Tourism. Further information can be found on the KUFS website and its course offerings for foreign students.

• English language skills at a level of B2 or higher (according to CEFR) (TOEFL iBT total score > 62 or IELTS level > 5.0)
• For studies in the Japanese Course: Proof of at least 150 hours of Japanese lessons

Official proof of English language proficiency is required for application to KUFS! Accepted test formats for proof of language proficiency: TOEFL iBT or IELTS

In preparation, it is recommended to acquire basic knowledge of Japanese (100 hours correspond to Unicert E1+2 | E3+4), for example through the courses offered by TUDIAS or the Center for East-Asia Studies at TU Dresden.

• Waiver of tuition fees at the KUFS
• Simplified recognition of academic achievements within the framework of a Learning Agreement
• Accommodation in a KUFS student residence

In advance:

• Certificate/proof that you have a sufficient budget while living in Japan: one million yen for six months
• Medical health certificate: between 14€ and 60€
• Language test: approx. $240 (TOEFL) or 200€ (IELTS)

During the stay:

The costs during a stay abroad can sometimes differ greatly from those here. Always keep the following costs in mind:

• Living expenses (food, drink, going out, hobbies, etc.)
• Mobile phone and internet costs
• Costs for public transportation or renting/buying a bicycle
• Costs for rent

After returning from Kyoto, students write a report on their experience abroad at KUFS. After submitting the report, students will receive their transcript. When submitting the report, students must indicate whether they agree to the publication of the anonymized report.

Formal requirements:

• Length 2-3 pages (font size 11, 1.5 line spacing, margins: top, left, right: 2.5 cm; bottom: 2 cm)
