Church history as a theological discipline researches and describes the emergence and spread of Christian doctrine and Christian life from its beginnings to the present day. With the help of historical theology, these events are appropriated from ever new perspectives. The history of the church and Christianity must be viewed in the context of socio-cultural development and thus also as part of general history. This results in the interest of church history in interdisciplinary exchange with other historical and philological subjects, at least in the area of the latest church history also with the social sciences.
