Closing Event of the German Pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale
Sung Tieu, They Have Eyes, But They See Not, They Have Ears, But They Hear Not, 2026. Mit freundlicher Genehmigung der Künstlerin.
Under the title “Ruin,” the German Pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale presents works by Sung Tieu and Henrike Naumann that explore the material and ideological upheavals of reunified Germany. In doing so, these works build a bridge to the present. For example, Sung Tieu’s mosaic trompe-l’œil, which covers the facade of the German Pavilion, alludes to East German prefabricated apartment buildings and related events.
Dr. Eva Bentcheva, a Maria Reiche Postdoctoral Fellow at the Chair of Visual Studies and Art History, co-organized the closing event on November 19, which offers deep insights into Sung Tieu’s work. Quinn Slobodian, professor of international history at Boston University, and Monica Juneja, Senior Professor of History of Art at Heidelberg University, will explore political and art-historical aspects of Sung Tieu’s work. The event will conclude with a conversation between the speakers and the artist, moderated by Dr. Eva Bentcheva.
Please note that due to limited seating, registration via email is required to attend.
