DFG Research Network "Transecologies: Contemporary Art in the Context of the Climate Crises"

The DFG Research Network “Transecologies: Contemporary Art in the Context of the Climate Crises,” founded by Dr. Lena Geuer (TU Dresden) and Dr. Hauke Ohls (University of Bonn), will officially launch this September.

Contemporary art produced in the context of the climate crisis—according to the research network’s central hypothesis—addresses transecological aspects. In order to adequately explore the complex interrelationships between diverse socio-ecological processes and their aesthetic and artistic negotiations, the network has set itself the task of developing a transecological approach for art history.

The prefix “trans,” here in its dynamic sense, has so far gained acceptance only in relation to cultural issues, but not in the context of ecology. While, for example, transcultural approaches have become established in German-language art studies since the 2010s, the integration of transecological perspectives into art history remains, at times, an unmet need.
