How does Romanticism, as a European phenomenon, extend beyond Europe’s borders? Through which channels and in what forms do Romantic aesthetics, worldviews, and bodies of knowledge circulate among local and global stakeholders? What role does the colonial world order play in this context? Focusing on the painter Raden Saleh (1811–1880), whose artistic life unfolded between his native Indonesia and various European locations such as Dresden and Paris, this lecture explores these questions.
As part of the lecture series “Upheaval and New Beginnings: Romanticism Born of the Spirit of Revolution? ” Guests are warmly welcome.
