The UNESCO Chair in International Relations (2009-2025) was established in a ceremony at the TUD Dresden University of Technology on April 21, 2009. It was the first UNESCO Chair in International Relations worldwide.
Teaching and research activities
The UNESCO Chair of International Relations was part of a global network of UNESCO Chairs in Germany and worldwide. The UNITWIN Network/UNESCO Chairs Program was established in 1992. It celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017 and currently comprises around 710 Chairs in over 120 countries ( read more). The UNESCO Chair in International Relations is part of theNetwork of UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs and C2Cs related to Culture.
The teaching and research activities of the UNESCO Chair in International Relations focused on the law and policy of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). An overview of our research activities can be found on the website core research areas.
There is no personal income associated with holding a UNESCO Chair. There are regular and extensive reporting and accountability obligations towards UNESCO and the university (current Progress Report 2021-2023).
Chair holder
Professor Dr. Dr. Sabine Freifrau von Schorlemer held the Chair of Public International Law, EU Law and International Relations at TU Dresden from 2000 to 2024. In 2009, she was awarded the UNESCO Chair of International Relations.
From September 2009 to November 2014, Professor von Schorlemer served as Saxon State Minister for Science and the Arts.
Chair contributions
The contributions of the UNESCO Chair of International Relations are dedicated to current topics in the fields of UNESCO law and policy, particularly with regard to the protection of cultural heritage and cultural diversity. In addition, current issues are raised to stimulate debate and serve as a basis for further research. Further information
