Exeter
The origins of the University of Exeter can be traced back to 1855 when the School of Arts was founded. The Exeter Law School has an excellent reputation and is among the best law schools in Britain. Despite the intensive academic programme, students still have plenty of time to enjoy the fascinating landscape of South-West England and to go on trips to the nearby coast or to Dartmoor National Park.
Semester schedule
The study period in Exeter for our LL.M. students starts at the end of September and ends in January. Subsequently, students complete a minimum of 4 weeks of subject-related internship.
Courses
All students in Exeter follow a lecture on British Intellectual Property Law such as Copyright, Design rights, Patents, or Trademarks. However, during their stay they can choose between two study options.
The first option requires the participation in two undergraduate courses (for example in Contract, Commercial or Tort Law). Hereby, our students gain insight into the British legal system. Additionally, they can choose one postgraduate seminar.
The second option requires the successful participation in two postgraduate seminars. One in IP Law and the other either in European, IT or IP Law.
Exams
The lecture is followed by an oral exam. At the end of the term a paper on Copyright Law and Policy of 3750 words in length must be completed.
Depending on the study option chosen, there are additional exams to be completed:
For option 1: In both of the undergraduate courses our students write a short essay of 3750 words length. The postgraduate seminar will require preparation of a presentation and a paper of 3750 words in length.
For option 2: In both postgraduate seminars students give a presentation and submit a paper of 3750 words in length.
By giving a presentation, the students learn to present complex legal issues in English. Students improve their abilities to discuss subjects and defend their opinions through concluding discussions. Lectures at Exeter use the case law method.
