Graduate School

The Research Training Group "Graduiertenkolleg Recht der Informationsgesellschaft" (GKRI) is a cross-university institution that guarantees long-term supervision of doctoral students. Over the course of two years, doctoral students participate in multi-day seminars for doctoral candidates in which they present and discuss their own work, and attend teaching sessions taught by all supervisors.

The idea behind the GKRI

Successful science thrives on networking and exchange. This is particularly true in the area of doctoral training. The supervisors, whose research focuses on IP, media, data and technology law, are creating an inter-faculty research training group for the education of their doctoral students. With a structured program, two goals are to be achieved: First, to further improve the quality of doctoral training. Second, it is intended to improve academic networking and to intensify the professional and personal exchange between the participants - supervisors and young academics. A critical element to the success of the project is the consistency of the participants. For this reason, only doctoral students from a total of 11 supervisors can participate in the Research Training Group. The selection decision will be made by each supervisor.

Events

The Research Training Group program lasts for two years for each participant and mandates active participation in 4 events for each doctoral student. Such participation is critical to the success of the project.The program includes two modules per year: the joint doctoral seminar and a teaching unit (consisting of several modules) at one of the partner universities. To participate in the Research Training Group, individuals must attend two doctoral seminars, present their own work at one of them, and participate in two teaching units. Upon completion of the full program, participants will receive a certificate.

Doctoral Seminar

​The doctoral supervisors participate in a seminar alongside their students, where the doctoral students present their research projects for discussion. If feasible, the seminar takes place at the site and time of the yearly GRUR conference, or alternatively at another appealing conference location in Germany (or neighboring countries). The doctoral candidates present their thesis or the current state of their work in an oral presentation (supported by slides, outline, handout) of a maximum of 30 minutes. Doctoral students engage in discussions about the methodology, theses, and research approach -  subsequently with the participation of the supervising professors (discussions last approximately 45-60 minutes). Each doctoral student enrolled in the program must deliver a presentation and participate in the discussion as a non-presenter at least once. Following the seminar, the presentation should be discussed with the supervisor.

Courses at the participating universities

The participating professors take turns in offering a block course (lecture/colloquium/workshop) at the host university. Each block course consists of 4-5 different teaching units given by the professors participating in the Research Training Group. In addition, it is also possible to have a guest lecturer. The goal is for the doctoral students to receive a total of at least 15 hours of science-specific training. The following modules are part of the curriculum:
