Information on Appeals and the Return of Exam Papers
The Examination Committee has adopted the following general procedure for the return of exams and for appeals:
Each exam taker may review their exam after consulting with the respective examiner. To do so, the review date announced by the faculty must be used; in exceptional cases, an additional date agreed upon with the examiner may be used. Attendance at the feedback session for the respective exam is strongly recommended.
The appeal must be submitted in writing. It must explain which aspects, in the appellant’s view, were assessed incorrectly. The alleged errors in evaluation must be specified. The review of the appeal is limited to the objections raised. Appeals that do not specifically identify and justify the grading errors will be rejected as inadmissible (e.g., general complaints that the grade was too strict; comparisons with fellow students’ exams without further substantive discussion, etc.). As a rule, the appeal should be filed within one month of the review meeting or after the exam has been made available for inspection, to ensure that the examiner is still available to address the appeal. An appeal filed after the expiration of the appeal deadlines applicable to the examiner’s decision will be rejected as inadmissible.
