Movies meet SDGs: film series of the UNESCO Chair
From time to time, the UNESCO Chair presents documentaries linked to our research, especially concerning the SDGs. Currently, we focus on movies about the protection of cultural heritage (SDG 11.4) as well as SDG no. 5: “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”. Following the movie screening, we organise conversation amongst invited experts as well as discussions amongst all participants.

The Destruction of Memory
Based on Robert Bevan’s book of the same title, documentarist Tim Slade produced a film about the destruction of cultural property in areas of conflict. Due to the destruction, evidence of millennia-old culture is lost beyond retrieval, especially in Syria and Iraq. In the documentary, Slade shows acts by, amongst others, ISIS, and how they have catastrophic impacts on cultural heritage, as well as efforts to combat this destruction. #FEMALE PLEASURE
The movie #FEMALE PLEASURE is about five strong, courageous, and clever women each from one of the five major world religions. They (successfully but riskily) fight for sexual liberation as well as for equality and respect between the genders.
#FEMALE PLEASURE follows the lives of Deborah Feldman, Leyla Hussein, Rokudenashiko, Doris Wagner and Vithika Yadav as well as their dedication to sexual education and liberation in a hyper-sexualised and secular world.

Speed Sisters
The movie portrays five Palestinian women who defy the stagnating conditions and gender roles by being the first female racing team in the Arab world. They do not put up with oppression, with Noor Daoud, one of the Speed Sisters, stating “When I race, I feel free”. Thanks to their courage and abilities, the five women have been developing a dynamic which is far ahead of local conditions – thus showing everyone what they are capable of.
