Policy Brief: Border Controls Between Germany and Poland—A Preliminary Assessment of Political and Social Impacts

Since June 2025, ongoing border checks on both sides of the border have been causing growing tensions—both political and social. In Poland, protests and disinformation campaigns are further inflaming the situation. The issue is being exploited in a targeted manner by right-wing populist and far-right opposition parties such as PiS and Konfederacja—a possible harbinger of future cooperation? The situation is also tense on the foreign policy front: While Poland signals a willingness to engage in dialogue, the German government is sticking to its controversial measures to curb irregular migration.
