Mercator Forum Migration and Democracy

MIDEM is investigating how migration shapes, and is shaped by, democratic policies, institutions and culture. MIDEM is a project of the Centre For The Study Of Constitutionalism And Democracy at Technische Universität Dresden in collaboration with the Duisburg-Essen University, funded by the Mercator Foundation. It is led by Prof. Dr. Hans Vorländer, TU Dresden.

Since 1995, this exchange programme run by the ZVD and New School for Social Research and funded by the DAAD, has been providing students in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science at TU Dresden with the opportunity to study at a renowned university in the USA.

Nach sorgfältiger Abwägung der Risikosituation durch die Verbreitung des Coronavirus müssen wir leider mitteilen, dass die Frühjahrstagung der Sektion "Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte" der Deutschen Vereinigung für Politikwissenschaft (DVPW) „Migration – Herausforderung im Spannungsfeld von Theorie und Praxis“ abgesagt wird. Wir hoffen, sie zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt durchführen zu können.

Research project “The good citizen”

The “good citizen” and his various roles are the central focus of this new ZVD research project, financed by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. Dresden political scientists Dr. Steven Schäller and Maik Herold will tackle the question of what makes a “good citizen” and in which horizons of expectation and attribution practices this is embedded.

About the ZVD

As an interdisciplinary research centre, the ZVD aims to further the scientific exchange between the legal, historical, social and political sciences within the field of constitutionalism and democracy research and promote international networking.

The ZVD is a forum for fundamental theoretical and empirical research into the creation and development of democratic constitutional order as well as the ideas of constitutionalism and democracy.

The core areas of research for the ZVD are the role of the constitution as a medium and point of reference for societal integration, the change of democratic constitutional orders subject to the conditions of 21st century global society as well as the different European constitutional cultures and the future conditions of regional and transnational spaces.
