Description

This seminar aims to introduce participants to the foundations of qualitative research in the social sciences (with a focus on the disciplines of International Relations, International Political Economy, and Political Science) and to prepare them for engaging in independent academic research. The seminar is guided by a pluralist understanding of qualitative research that includes both positivist (i.e. studying causality) and interpretivist (i.e. studying the constitution of meaning) methodologies. The strengths and limitations of these methodologies will be explored in open in-class discussions. Participants will be introduced to a variety of methods for data collection (e.g. interviewing, ethnographic research, archival research) and analysis (e.g. congruence method, content analysis, discourse analysis). Special attention will be given to providing guidelines for developing coherent research designs that align the logic of inference with the employed methods for data collection and analysis. In addition to discussing the fundamentals of qualitative research, participants will be exposed to practical how-to questions that are essential for producing high-quality research output on the BA and MA levels (e.g. research question, literature review). The separate blocks in the seminar structure build on each other, therefore the successful attainment of the learning objectives is dependent on regular attendance and active participation. The seminar relies extensively on interactive discussions that aim to unpack pre-assigned readings and to address challenges identified by the participants. The language of instruction is English.

Das Seminar untersucht die zunehmende Transnationalisierung von Rechtsaußen-Akteuren. Dabei diskutieren wir sowohl Parteipolitik als auch soziale Bewegungen und andere außerparlamentarische Gruppierungen und Zirkeln. Das Seminar gliedert sich in drei Teile: Im ersten Teil („Ideologie“) analysieren wir den Wandel des klassischen Nativismus hin zu zivilisatorischen bzw. „europäischen“ Selbstverständnissen und wie gemeinsame Feindbilder globale ideologische Brücken schlagen. Im zweiten Teil („Praxis“) stehen transnationale Verflechtungen im Zentrum, etwa im Europäischen Parlament, bei Protestwellen, internationalen Kampagnen und der Diffusion von Labels. Im dritten Teil („Digitalisierung“) analysieren wir die Rolle digitaler Öffentlichkeiten, sozialer Medien und Plattformen für die internationale Vernetzung von Rechtsaußen-Akteuren. Im gesamten Seminar fragen wir nach der Stärke dieser transnationalen Netzwerke und inwiefern nationale Kontexte weiterhin handlungsleitend sind, und transnationale Angleichungen begrenzen. Das Seminar richtet sich an Studierende der Politikwissenschaft und angrenzender Fächer, die sich empirisch-analytisch mit einer zentralen Frage an der Schnittstelle zwischen vergleichender Politikwissenschaft und internationaler Politik befassen möchten.
