Description

In recent years, an increasing number of global citizens’ movements have taken “justice” as their explicit goal. This has been accompanied by a proliferation of protest actions that seek to reconfigure the way power, agency and resistance are being perceived and performed. Protest movements in different parts of the world evoke promises of radical political change through shaming powerful states and international institutions into good behavior. However, spaces of resistance themselves produce exclusions thereby complicating any easy understanding of power, agency and vulnerability. In this class we will simultaneously engage with scholarship on civil society and public spheres as well as focus on examples of new social movements globally. The effort will be to understand the link between democratization, social movement activism and international civil society action.

Description

Dieses Seminar befasst sich mit der EU-Erweiterung nach Osten als Fallbeispiel für integratives Regieren in der Weltpolitik. Studierende werden eingeladen, sich der Untersuchung dieses laufenden Prozesses zu widmen, indem sie das konzeptionelle und theoretische Instrumentarium für einen selbstständigen und systematischen Forschungsansatz erwerben. Studierende werden an der Anwendung von einer Reihe theoretischer Perspektiven (inkl. rationalistischer, konstruktivistischer und kritischer Ansätze) in die Analyse der Ursachen und Auswirkungen der EU-Ostwerweiterung beteiligt. Das heißt die EU-Erweiterung wird nicht nur als ein institutioneller Prozess mit spezifischen Vorschriften und Verfahren betrachtet, sondern als ein umstrittener Prozess, dessen Flugbahn von Machtdynamiken, sozialen Konfigurationen und ideologischen Umwandlungen abhängt. Die theoriebezogenen Diskussionen werden die Studierenden für selbstständige Forschungsarbeit vorbereiten, indem sie die erworbenen konzeptionellen und theoretischen Kenntnisse in der empirischen Analyse anwenden. Das Seminar ist für Studierende angepasst, die selbstbewusst an aktuellen politischen Diskussionen über die Zukunft der EU teilnehmen möchten, sowie für diejenigen, die von einem vertieften Forschungsinteresse an verwandten Themen getrieben sind.

Description

Warum führt ein Staat Krieg, während ein anderer auf Diplomatie setzt? Warum bricht eine Regierung mit langjährigen Bündnispartnern, während eine andere an ihnen festhält? Die Außenpolitikanalyse liefert die theoretischen Werkzeuge, um außenpolitische Entscheidungen zu verstehen und zu erklären – von historischen Krisen bis zu aktuellen geopolitischen Konflikten.
In diesem Seminar erarbeiten wir theoretische Ansätze, mit denen sich außenpolitische Prozesse und Entscheidungen erklären lassen. Dabei fragen wir: Welche Rolle spielen internationale Machtstrukturen, innenpolitische Interessen und gesellschaftliche Dynamiken oder auch die persönlichen Eigenschaften einzelner Entscheidungsträger:innen?
Wir beginnen auf der systemischen Ebene und fragen, wie Großtheorien der Internationalen Beziehungen außenpolitisches Verhalten aus der Struktur des internationalen Systems heraus erklären. Von dort aus wechseln wir auf die subsystemische Ebene und untersuchen, wie innenpolitische Faktoren wie Institutionen, Interessengruppen oder gesellschaftliche Debatten außenpolitische Entscheidungen prägen. Schließlich richten wir den Blick auf die Ebene des Individuums und beleuchten, wie psychologische und kognitive Prozesse Entscheidungsträger:innen beeinflussen.
Anhand historischer und aktueller außenpolitischer Fälle arbeiten wir heraus, wo die theoretischen Ansätze überzeugen und wo sie an ihre Grenzen stoßen. Am Ende des Seminars sind Sie in der Lage, außenpolitische Prozesse eigenständig und systematisch zu analysieren, theoretisches Wissen auf konkrete Fälle anzuwenden und die Ergebnisse Ihrer Analyse kritisch einzuordnen.
