- Die Vorlesung nimmt die Kunst und die Entwicklungen der italienischen Renaissance in den Blick. Neben zentralen Künstlern werden auch die wichtigen Kunstzentren Florenz, Mantua und Rom vorgestellt, um die Geschichte der Renaissance an ihren prominentesten Beispielen zu diskutieren. Dabei werden sowohl zentrale Werke der Malerei, Skulptur und Architektur als auch die politischen, sozialen und religiösen Rahmenbedingungen behandelt, innerhalb derer diese entstanden sind. Themen wie die Wiederentdeckung der Antike, neue Formen der Bildrepräsentation, die Rolle von Auftraggebern und die Ausbildung eines neuen Künstlerverständnisses bilden dabei zentrale Leitfragen der Vorlesung.

- Gegenstand dieses Einführungskurses sind die Grundzüge der Architekturgeschichte von der Antike bis zur Moderne. Entlang eines chronologischen Leitfadens werden Anfangskenntnisse von den Architektursystemen verschiedener Epochen (z.B. griechische Säulenordnungen, frühchristliche Basiliken, gotische Kathedralen, usw.) vermittelt. Dabei werden auch die spezifischen Begriffe der Formenlehre und Architekturbeschreibung sowie die methodischen Schritte der Bauanalyse behandelt. Im Fokus stehen die Schlüsselbauten der Architekturgeschichte vom Parthenon Tempel bis zur Berliner Reichstagskuppel.
Das Seminar ist Teil des Pflichtmoduls im Kernbereich des Bachelor-Studiengangs Kunstgeschichte sowie im Ergänzungsbereich (70 Credits) anderer Bachelor-Studiengänge der Philosophischen Fakultät. Die Studienleistungen bestehen aus einer Klausur im Umfang von 90 Minuten sowie ggf. einer mündlichen Prüfungsleistung mit visueller Präsentation. Zum Proseminar findet ein Tutorium statt, in welchem die Themen vertiefend bearbeitet als auch die begrifflichen Grundlagen geschaffen werden und Übungen möglich sind. - Literature

- Auf Streifzügen durch die Altstadt, die Neustadt, Dresden-Friedrichstadt und die Pirnaische Vorstadt sollen Bauplastik, Denkmäler, Brunnen und Wandbilder betrachtet werden, welche die wechselvolle Geschichte der Stadt vom Barock bis zu DDR-Zeiten auf ganz unterschiedliche und für die jeweilige Kunstströmung charakteristische Weise widerspiegeln.
Neben bekannten plastischen Zeugnissen des Barock in Zwinger und Hofkirche stehen auch unbedeutendere Werke, wie die Reliefs am Studentenwohnheim Güntzstraße 28, die Fassadengestaltungen in der Kunsthofpassage der Neustadt, der bauplastische Schmuck der Kunstakademie sowie die Türreliefs und der Wandfries im 1. Obergeschoss des Kulturpalastes auf unserem Seminarprogramm.

- Die Geschichte der Kunst im heutigen Sachsen beginnt spät, aber spektakulär. Erst nach der Gründung der ersten Klöster und mit dem Wachstum der jungen Städte im 12. Jahrhundert entstand hier eine größere Zahl monumentaler, reich ausgestatteter Sakralbauten. Schon bald danach, in den Jahrzehnten um und nach 1200, kamen einige der herausragenden Künstler ihrer Generation in die damals prosperierende Markgrafschaft Meißen. Sie schufen Werke von europäischem Rang: den Wechselburger Lettner etwa, die Freiberger Goldene Pforte oder die Skulpturen des Meißener Doms. Eine weitere Blütezeit erfuhr die Region in den Jahrzehnten um 1500, als nahezu jede Stadt ihre Kirche erweitern, umbauen oder auch ganz neu errichten und dazu opulent ausstatten ließ. Das Seminar widmet sich diesen und weiteren Werken der Bau- und Bildkünste im Rahmen von drei ganztägigen Vor-Ort-Sitzungen in Wechselburg, Meißen und Freiberg. Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, einerseits grundlegende Techniken des Beschreibens und Analysierens vor den Originalen einzuüben, andererseits am Beispiel repräsentativer Hauptwerke einen Überblick über die sakrale (und in geringerem Maße auch weltliche) Kunst des Hoch- und Spätmittelalters in Europa zu gewinnen.

- Industrialisierung, Urbanisierung und die Herausbildung moderner Klassengesellschaften veränderten nicht nur Produktionsweisen, sondern auch die visuellen Strategien, mit denen Arbeit, Arbeiter*innen und Arbeitsprozesse dargestellt und zum Teil politisch aufgeladen wurden. Seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts rücken entsprechende Themen verstärkt ins Zentrum der bildenden Kunst, wobei Künstler*innen maßgeblich zur visuellen Konstruktion sozialer Wirklichkeiten beitrugen, indem sie Arbeit in ihren Werken thematisierten, idealisierten, problematisierten oder symbolisch überhöhten.
Ausgehend von den realistischen Positionen Gustave Courbets, Jean-François Millets und Adolph Menzels untersucht das Seminar, wie Arbeit in der Kunst seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts verstärkt zum Thema gemacht wird. Im frühen 20. Jahrhundert verschärfen sozialkritische, expressionistische und politisch engagierte Bildprogramme, etwa im Umfeld der Arbeiterbewegung, der Russischen Revolution oder der Neuen Sachlichkeit, die Frage nach der sozialen Funktion von Kunst. Spätestens mit der Etablierung sozialistischer Bildpolitiken in der DDR wird Arbeit zu einem zentralen ideologischen Leitmotiv, dessen visuelle Normierung es ebenso zu diskutieren gilt wie seine Brüche und Ambivalenzen.
Auf der Grundlage mehrerer Exkursionen soll im Seminar anhand exemplarischer Fallstudien verdeutlicht werden, wie sich der Begriff der Arbeit im Spannungsfeld von Körper, Handwerk, Technik, Ideologie und künstlerischer Praxis verändert und welche sozialen, politischen und ästhetischen Konzepte den behandelten Werken eingeschrieben sind.
Neben der Malerei werden auch andere Medien einbezogen, insbesondere die Fotografie als Dokumentations-, Propaganda- und Kritikmedium. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der deutschen Kunst und dem mitteldeutschen Raum, mit Fokus auf regionalen Sammlungen und Institutionen der Industriekultur. Internationale Fallbeispiele dienen der vergleichenden Perspektivierung nationaler Bildtraditionen. Zu den behandelten Künstler*innen zählen neben den Genannten u. a. Thomas Hart Benton, Ford Madox Brown, Otto Griebel, Laura Knight, Käthe Kollwitz, Wilhelm Leibl, Max Liebermann, Constantin Meunier, Tina Modotti, August Sander, Martha Schrag, Eva Schulze-Knabe, Charles Sheeler, Willi Sitte, Robert Sterl und Werner Tübke.
Das Seminar findet 14-tägig, ergänzt durch einzelne Blocktermine, statt. Die Absprache der Termine sowie die Vergabe der Referatsthemen erfolgt in der ersten Sitzung. - Am 17. Mai 1946 findet in den ehemaligen Althoff-Studios Babelsberg die Gründungsfeier der Deutschen Film-Aktiengesellschaft statt. Die ersten DEFA-Produktionen widmen sich unmittelbar den Ereignissen der jüngsten deutschen Geschichte: Am 15. Oktober, einen Tag vor der Vollstreckung der Todesurteile im Nürnberger Prozess, feiert Wolfgang Staudtes „Die Mörder sind unter uns“ Premiere, der von der Konfrontation eines heimgekehrten Soldaten mit einem Kriegsverbrecher erzählt. Ein Jahr darauf wird Kurt Maetzigs „Ehe im Schatten“, der die Auswirkungen der NS-Politik auf ein Ehepaar behandelt, zum erfolgreichsten deutschen Film der Nachkriegsjahre. Bis zu ihrer Abwicklung im Jahr 1992 produziert die DEFA über 700 Spielfilme; hinzu kommen rund 950 Animationsfilme und etwa 2.000 Dokumentationen. Zwischen kulturpolitischem Anspruch, ideologischer Kontrolle und künstlerischer Eigenständigkeit entsteht so ein Korpus von bemerkenswerter stilistischer und thematischer Vielfalt.
Anhand ausgewählter Filme und thematischer Schwerpunkte bietet das Seminar einen Überblick über zentrale Phasen und Genres der DEFA-Produktion, von den antifaschistischen Nachkriegsfilmen über den sozialistischen Gegenwartsfilm, Literaturverfilmungen und historische Stoffe bis hin zu Filmen, in denen sich zunehmend Ambivalenzen und indirekte Formen der Kritik artikulieren. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei der Frage, wie gesellschaftliche Umbrüche, Alltagswirklichkeiten und individuelle Handlungsspielräume filmisch verhandelt werden.
Ein zentraler Bestandteil des Seminars ist die vergleichende Perspektive: Die Kontextualisierung mit internationalen Filmen zeigt, auf welche Vorbilder sich DEFA-Regisseur*innen bezogen. Beispiele aus dem sowjetischen Kino, dem italienischen Neorealismus oder der französischen Nouvelle Vague ermöglichen es, Gemeinsamkeiten, Abgrenzungen und spezifische Bedingungen der Filmproduktion in der DDR zu bestimmen. Der DEFA-Film erscheint so nicht als isoliertes Phänomen, sondern als Teil eines transnationalen filmischen Austauschs unter asymmetrischen politischen und ökonomischen Voraussetzungen.
Das Seminar verfolgt einen filmhistorischen wie auch -analytischen Ansatz und verbindet close reading einzelner Filme mit übergeordneten Fragen nach Zensur, Autorschaft, Genre, Bildpolitik und Erinnerungskultur. Der DEFA-Film soll dabei als komplexes kulturelles Archiv verstanden werden, in dem sich ästhetische Ambitionen, politische Erwartungen und individuelle Handschriften überlagern.

- Was ist Avantgarde? Für die Avantgardegruppen im 20. Jahrhundert waren Ausstellungen ein essenzielles Mittel, sich in der Öffentlichkeit zu präsentieren und positionieren, sich bekannt zu machen. Durch Ausstellungen treten die Künstler:innen, Designer:innen und Architekt:innen in direkten Dialog mit dem Publikum und können ihre oftmals radikalen Ideen und Visionen zur Diskussion stellen und traditionelle Sichtweisen hinterfragen. Vielfach standen gesellschaftliche, politische oder soziale Prozesse im Zentrum: Der Raum wurde als Plattform zur Provokation genutzt, um gesellschaftliche Normen und althergebrachte Kunstverständnisse zu hinterfragen und zu dekonstruieren. Innovative Gestaltung der Ausstellungen bis hin zu dynamischen und performativen Modellen der Interaktion mit den Besucher:innen ermöglichten neue Formen des Wahrnehmens und Erlebens.
Aufbauend auf den ersten Teil des Seminars im Sommersemester 2025, der sich mit Avantgardeausstellungen der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts beschäftigte, untersucht der zweite Teil außergewöhnliche und einflussreiche Ausstellungen seit 1946. Ausgangspunkt sind die Bestandsaufnahmen der Nachkriegszeit in Dresden und Kassel (Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstausstellung 1946 und documenta 1955). Darauf folgen als Reaktion Ausstellungen von international ausgerichteten Künstlergruppen (z.B. CoBrA im Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam 1949) sowie interdisziplinäre Projekte, in denen neue Formen kollektiver Ausstellungspraxis erprobt wurden: This Is Tomorrow (Whitechapel Gallery, London 1956), Italy: The New Domestic Landscape (MoMA, New York City, 1972) oder Gefühlscollagen (Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf 1986). Das Seminar verfolgt diese Entwicklung bis in die Gegenwart, bis zum Wechsel von Design- und Kunstausstellungen zu globalen Forschungsplattformen (z.B. Architektur- und Kunstbiennalen Venedig, ab 2009) und investigativen Verhandlungsräumen von Themen wie Nachhaltigkeit, digitaler Produktion oder sozialer Praxis.
Jede Teilnehmer:in übernimmt ein Impulsreferat von ca. 20 Minuten. Zu den Sitzungen werden Originale (Objekte und Archivalien) präsentiert.
Das Seminar findet statt im Archiv der Avantgarden – Egidio Marzona (ADA), Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden und erfolgt in Zusammenarbeit mit den ADA-Archivarinnen und Kurator:innen. Eine Tagesexkursion sowie eine Führung durch das ADA sind geplant. - Assignments
