Description

Moralische Normen schreiben vor, wie wir handeln sollen („Tue das, was gut ist“). Epistemische Normen legen fest, was wir glauben sollen („Glaube das, was wofür Du gute Gründe hast“). Doch worauf beruht die epistemische Normativität? Ist das Befolgen epistemischer Normen instrumentell wertvoll – also dient es unseren (nicht-epistemischen) Zwecken? Oder gelten epistemische Normen, weil wir tugendhaft sein sollten? Oder haben epistemische Normen Autorität, weil es unser Selbstbild als rationale Wesen einfordert? In diesem Seminar werden wir uns mit zentralen Texten zur epistemischen Normativität auseinandersetzen. Da die meisten Texte lediglich in englischer Sprache vorliegen, sind gute Englischkenntnisse Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme.

„Wie sind synthetische Urteile a priori möglich?“ lautet die Leitfrage von Kants kritischer Philosophie, in ihr bündeln sich weitreichende erkenntnistheoretische und metaphysische Probleme, die Kant mit seiner Lehre eines „transzendentalen Idealismus“ zu überwinden sucht. Die Theorie des Raumes und der Zeit als apriorischer Anschauungsformen spielt dabei bekanntermaßen eine zentrale Rolle. Weniger bekannt ist die zentrale Stellung der Mathematik für Kant, insbesondere der Geometrie: erstens als Fall einer Wissenschaft, innerhalb derer synthetische Urteile a priori möglich sind, und zweitens als mit der Philosophie konkurrierendes Methodenparadigma. Das inhaltliche Hauptziel des Seminars ist es, Kants transzendentalen Idealismus anhand seiner Theorie des Raumes und der Geometrie zu erschließen. Vertiefend werden wir dabei einen Blick auf die konkurrierenden Raumtheorien bei Descartes, Leibniz und Newton werfen und uns mit der Forschungsdebatte zu Kants Theorie der geometrischen Konstruktionsmethode beschäftigen. Kants „Kritik der reinen Vernunft“ in der Ausgabe von Jens Timmermann (Hamburg: Meiner 1998) wird zur Anschaffung empfohlen. Ein Reader wird auf OPAL bereitgestellt.
