Greeting from Prof. Ursula M. Staudinger, Rector TUD Dresden University of Technology and member of the advisory board of the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden
"Technological innovations are transforming our lives, our educational and working environments, but they are also imperceptibly influencing patterns of behavior and, not least, values. Conversely, new technologies also arise from the needs and requirements of our coexistence as well as human preferences and priorities. Research into the relevant questions and feedback loops requires a broad-based interdisciplinary approach that spans the spectrum from mathematics, natural and technical sciences to behavioral, social and cultural sciences. The newly established Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden takes this necessity into account with its research training group and an artist-in-residence program. Here, doctoral students question the interactions between technology and society from the perspective of the humanities and social sciences together with an artist. The establishment of the Lab's artist residency, which sees art in the sense of artistic research as a potential and partner for the discourse on technology and society, is an important unique selling point of our Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden.
This expresses a kind of broadly understood interdisciplinarity that can be implemented particularly well at TU Dresden as a full-spectrum technical university and which inspires me as Rector. At the same time, the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden fits in very well with the goals of the new University Executive Board, which can be briefly summarized under the motto "TU Dresden as a globally related and locally anchored university in the 21st century".
I would like to thank THE SCHAUFLER FOUNDATION from Sindelfingen, which has been very closely associated with our institution for many years through its support in the field of refrigeration, cryogenics and compression technology and also through the awarding of German scholarships. The fact that the Foundation is now also exceptionally involved as a driving force and sponsor with the transdisciplinary lab anchored in the Office for Academic Heritage, Scientific and Art Collections once again makes it clear that art, science and entrepreneurship can be thought of and lived in the same breath.
I wish the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, its scholarship holders and artists exciting years at our university and many interesting discoveries of their own."
Greeting from Ingo Smit, Chairman of the Board of THE SCHAUFLER FOUNDATION
"We are extremely pleased to be initiating a new type of project together with the TUD Dresden University of Technology that exemplifies our foundation principle of promoting and combining science, research and art. With the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, we not only want to promote the discourse between research and art, but also make a significant contribution to the dialog between these fields and society.
We have been supporting TU Dresden for many years by sponsoring the BITZER Endowed Chair for Refrigeration, Cryogenics and Compressor Technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering and by awarding ten German scholarships each year. With the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, we are now embarking on a new path together that takes our partnership into the future and represents an important contribution by our foundation in terms of cooperation between private entrepreneurship, science and art.
The project brings together two ideas: on the one hand, it promotes the networking of different scientific disciplines within the framework of a graduate college, which is aimed in a targeted manner at doctoral students from the humanities and social sciences; on the other hand, it enables new forms of collaboration between artists and scientists through an artist residency.
With this approach, the program fits in perfectly with the funding philosophy of the foundation established by Peter Schaufler in 2005. The explicit aim of THE SCHAUFLER FOUNDATION is to promote innovative projects in the fields of science, research, entrepreneurship and society. The foundation's strong commitment to art is reflected in its own museum, the SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen. In addition to the important collection of contemporary artworks by the founder couple Peter Schaufler and Christiane Schaufler-Münch, temporary exhibitions by internationally renowned artists are also shown here. The foundation's headquarters in Sindelfingen with the SCHAUWERK Museum is also an important point of reference for the participants of the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden. They will hold symposia and retreats there at regular intervals. In addition, the residency artists will present themselves with a final exhibition at SCHAUWERK at the end of each funding phase.
Together with TU Dresden and the members of the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, we look forward to initiating new discourses on issues such as social and cultural change through and with technology and making them accessible to a broad public!"
Greeting from Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, Rector TUD Dresden University of Technology (2010-2020), initiator of the project and member of the advisory board of THE SCHAUFLER FOUNDATION
"At the TUD Dresden University of Technology, we conduct intensive research in numerous institutes and cooperation projects between the humanities and engineering sciences on the topics of Culture and Societal Change. Our aim is not only to transfer the knowledge generated here to the public, but also to open up a broad-based dialog on urgent future issues.
With the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden - located in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, more precisely in the Faculty of Arts, Scientific and Art Collections - our university is radically re-exploring the interfaces between technology, art and science. At the same time, the new format provides relevant impetus for synergetic discourse between scientific disciplines and for interactive exchange with society.
The Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden thus represents the logical and innovative expansion of the existing transdisciplinary exhibition and mediation format of the Art Science Labs, which were initiated by the Office for Academic Heritage, Scientific and Art Collections in 2016/17. Here, too, the challenges of new technologies and social issues of the future are negotiated in an exchange between artistic and scientific practice. The Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden significantly expands this idea by combining the artist-in-residence program with a graduate college. In this way, the social and cultural conditions as well as the consequences of technical change are researched from different perspectives in an excellent scientific manner.
By involving artistic stakeholders and explicitly questioning research, we are opening up the seemingly hermetic scientific discourses. We explicitly invite citizens to contribute their knowledge and experience of the integration and impact of modern technologies in their living environments to the debate.
We are delighted to have found a creative and generous partner in THE SCHAUFLER FOUNDATION, who wants to work with us to provide new impetus in the discourse between technology, art and science. We would like to expressly thank the foundation, which has also supported our university for many years by sponsoring the BITZER Endowed Chair for Refrigeration, Cryogenics and Compressor Technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering and by endowing ten German scholarships, for its great commitment to the benefit of our university."
