Fellow Marie Briese at the EABS Annual Conference 2024 in Sofia
From 15.07. to 18.07.24, the Annual Conference of the European Association of Biblical Studies (EABS) took place in Sofia, where Schaufler Kolleg fellow Marie Briese presented her paper entitled "Biblically Legitimized Right-wing Populism on Instagram. An Example-based Analysis of Postings by Christian and Right-wing Actors".
The annual conferences form the heart of the Association, which is organized into Research Units and covers a wide range of biblical research areas. Marie Briese gave her lecture as part of the Research Unit "Politization of Bibles and Biblization of Politics in the Twenty-First Century". In it, she gave the international audience, consisting of professors and early-career researchers, insights into her research into collaborations between right-wing populist and Christian influencers on Instagram. Central aspects of her paper were, on the one hand, the analysis of the common interest of right-wing populists and fundamentalist Christians in a ban on abortion and, on the other hand, the examination of the mixture of seemingly biblically-legitimized argumentation and populist style.
After the lecture, a lively discussion took place, which confirmed Marie Briese's research project and revealed opportunities for international cooperation.
In addition, Marie Briese took on the role of chair in another session of the above-mentioned Research Unit and led the discussions after three presentations.
As a participant of the conference, she herself attended lectures on gender and policy-related topics as well as formats for the promotion of early-career researchers.
