“Unpacking Generativity” – Review
On October 7th, 2025, the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden hosted the symposium “Unpacking Generativity,” which focused on the epistemological, political, and aesthetic dimensions of generative AI systems. We look back on an inspiring day full of interdisciplinary contributions, stimulating discussions, and new perspectives on the topic of generativity.
The starting point was the desire to think critically and broadly about the concept of generativity – beyond its technical and commercial uses. The presentations and discussions highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary exchange in critically approaching the generativity of AI systems as a cultural, epistemic, and political practice and the related questions of power, responsibility, and cultural transformation.
With thought-provoking keynotes by Sun-ha Hong, Rainer Mühlhoff, and Vera Tollmann, as well as enriching lightning talks by Yannick Nepomuk Fritz, Konstantin Mitrokhov, Nora Freya Lindemann, Sandeep Mertia, Alexandra Gilliams, and Larissa Lenze, this symposium was characterized by rich dialogues and constructive intersections.
We would like to thank all speakers, participants, and supporters for their inspiring contributions, their commitment, and their great interest. Special thanks go to The Schaufler Foundation for their support, as well as to everyone who contributed to the success of this stimulating symposium.
