Stay Abroad
For students of English, the compulsory stay abroad in an English-speaking country represents a central field of experience and development. In order to benefit from this as much as possible, it is recommended that this stay during the course of study be as extensive as possible and designed in a targeted manner to promote the acquisition of skills. For student teachers, for example, a one-year placement as an 'assistant teacher' can optimally support the training process with regard to the specific professional standards.
The minimum requirements set out in the study documents and examination regulations fall well short of these considerations and do not specify any content standards. It is therefore up to the students to plan and organize their personal stay abroad beyond the minimum requirements. You will receive advisory support from the Institute's faculty - in particular from the student advisors and the teaching staff in the Language Practice department.
Proof ofstays abroad must be submitted directly to the relevant Examination Office as follows:
Students in the teaching-related Master's degree programs (M.Ed. Higher Teaching Qualification at Grammar Schools / Vocational Schools) fill out the application for confirmation of a stay in an English-speaking country (MEd) in full and then submit it with the complete supporting documents (see below!) directly and in person to Prof. Dr. Andreas Marschollek during office hours. If the following minimum requirements are met, your stay will be recognized:
- The stay may be split up and may have already taken place in whole or in part before the start of your studies.
- The total duration of all phases must be at least 3 months (= 90 days).
- The duration, location and type of stay must be clearly documented by suitable original receipts (flight tickets, certificates, etc.). Copies of the original documents submitted must be attached.
Students in teacher training courses with a state degree (teaching degree at elementary school, secondary schools, grammar schools, vocational schools) must provide proof of the stay abroad required by LAPO I (teaching degree at elementary school: 2 months; other teaching degrees: 3 months) directly to the responsible state Examination Office when registering for the state examination.
Independently of this, students of English in teacher training courses with a state degree can apply for recognition of a stay in an English-speaking country as part of the supplementary study area in the following modules: EGS-SEGS, EGS-SEMS-2, EGS-SEMS-3, EGS-SEGY-2, EGS-SEGY-3, EGS-SEBS-2A. To do this, the application form must be completed in full and then submitted to the English Language Practice Coordinator (Ms. Sandra Erdmann) in person during office hours for examination, together with the necessary supporting documents. If the conditions are met, the stay will be recognized to the extent of 4 basic points for the supplementary area. To this end, students applying for recognition must also complete the form provided for this purpose on the ZLSB website, following the procedure described there, and submit it to the English Language Practice Coordinator.
Conditions for recognition in the supplementary teaching area:
- The stay must have taken place in a maximum of 2 blocks entirely during the course of study.
- The total duration of Block 1 (and Block 2 if applicable) must be at least 3 months (= 90 days).
- The duration, location and type of stay must be clearly documented by suitable original documents (flight tickets, certificates, etc. as well as the certificate of enrollment, which must show that the stay abroad took place during the course of study). Copies of all original documents submitted must be attached.
- The application must also include a 3-page reflection on the stay, written in English, with reference to the qualification objectives formulated in the respective module of the supplementary area.
