Chair of British Cultural Studies
The department of British Cultural Studies is part of the cultural studies profile within the Humanities at Dresden University of Technology. It is one of six departments composing the Institute of English and American Studies. Since October 2021, Prof. Dr. Cornelia Wächter has held the position as chair of British Cultural Studies, succeeding Seniorprofessor Dr. Thomas Kühn.
Our Profile
The field of British Cultural Studies is generally concerned with cultural processes within society and in particular their various forms of representation in media, art, and politics. It offers a set of theories, texts and transdisciplinary approaches to analyse facets of (everyday) culture, especially with regards to their political dimensions. Thus, questions relating to representation, identity and difference/alterity, power and hegemony are central.
As the chair of British Cultural Studies at the TUD, Prof. Dr. Wächter’s research interests lie in the studies of narratives and mental health, complicity and affect, queer studies, (queer) masculinities, and space/place. She is the principal investigator and organiser of the international, interdisciplinary network Complicity: Enfoldings and Unfoldings, funded by the German Research Foundation, and one of the editors of the book series Narratives and Mental Health (Brill). Research and teaching foci of the British Cultural Studies team at TUD, moreover, include critical theory, studies on power and cultural hegemony, subjectivity and identity, on posthumanism, ecocriticism, and the discourse and politics of the Anthropocene.
