Studying British Cultural Studies
Within British Cultural Studies a wide choice of topics from different fields of the British Cultures is offered. The programme is complemented by guest lectures and readings by authors.
Lectures
The lectures focus on historic periods and provide an overview of the interrelations between politics, economy, social history and culture. Cultural history from the 16th century until today is introduced over a period of six semesters.
Introductory Course
The course “Introduction to British Cultural Studies” conveys factual basic knowledge about British institutions, life styles and current topics at the beginning of studies. Students are introduced to the academic field of Cultural Studies and provided with the theoretical foundations for later dealings with texts. The introductory course is accompanied by tutorials which serve the discussion of single focus topics and the introduction to academic work.
“Übungen“
In the introductory module of the BA course, students have to attend an accompanying “Übung“. Here, they deal with Cultural Studies texts on specific topics in detail.
Seminars
In seminars, single aspects of British Cultures are dealt with extensively, and students' theoretical knowledge is practically applied and consolidated.
For basic studies respectively second year of BA studies, undergraduate seminars are offered. Students in their main studies, third year BA and Master students can attend seminars.
In seminars, students work with different sorts of texts and media relating to the topic. In doing so, reading and presentation skills are developed and academic writing is practised by writing extended essays.
