Solarity & the Sea
Anja Lind at the “Petrocultures Los Angeles”
May 15–18
University of Southern California
From May 15–18, Anja Lind will be travelling to “Petrocultures Los Angeles” at the University of Southern California, the pre-eminent conference of the Energy Humanities, to give a presentation on part of her dissertation work, with a paper entitled “Solarity & the Sea”:
This paper opens a dialogue between solarities and the blue humanities—and a conjoined generic discussion between solarpunk and (imagined) hydrofiction—on the body of Kim Stanley Robinson’s (2017) submerged future New York. Teasing out the parallel political, social and elemental concerns—“What happens to property in a world awash [with energy?]” (Szeman 2020, 131; emphasis added)—amidst Robinson’s own moorings of capital, New York urbanity, radical organisation and water, this paper looks to the amphibious ontologies and fluid epistemologies of New York 2140’s ‘water rats’ as a critical supplement to solarity for thinking post-oil cities, political organisation, and relationality.
This research trip is generously part-funded by the Chair for North American Literature with a focus on Critical Future Studies.
