Accommodation and Travel
Conference participants are asked to make their own hotel or hostel reservations. Quota reservations have been made at the Hotel Barcelo Newa (close to main station and old town), Hotel Ibis Dresden Zentrum (close to main station and old town), Gästehaus am Weberplatz (right next to conference site), and Motel One Dresden Zwinger (close to main station and old town) for a special conference discount. These room prices are available only for bookings made directly with the hotel by online reservation through their booking link, website, email or by phone. In order to benefit from the conference rate, please book your room using the instructions below. Some of the hotels have both single and double rooms available at the conference rate. Since August is peak tourist season, don’t wait too long to book your rooms.
For a map to the location of hotels, the conference venue, bars, sites and museums, and public transport, please see MAP HERE.
Most of the hotels below are located in the old-town central district of Dresden. You may also find more moderately priced accommodation at hostels or hotels in other parts of the city (for proximity to alternative arts, culture, and Dresden’s famous bar scene, we recommend looking in the neighborhood of Dresden Neustadt, a 13-20 minute tram-ride away from the conference venue).

Dresden Neustadt
The more alternative arts, culture, and bar district is called Dresden Neustadt and located on the other side of the river. In that area, you will also find a range of other hotels and international hostels such as Hostel Mondpalast (https://www.mondpalast.de) or Hostel Louise 20 (https://www.louise20.de/en/). The commute to the conference venue takes about 20-30 minutes by tram.
Getting to Dresden
Dresden, the capital of Saxony, is renowned for its baroque architecture and rich cultural history. The city’s Airport (DRS) has multiple daily flights to other major European airports (e.g. Frankfurt FRA, Berlin BER, London Heathrow LHR, Zürich ZRH, Amsterdam Schiphol AMS).
Traveling to Dresden by train (Deutsche Bahn) is easy and comfortable. Dresden is connected to almost all major cities, with connections to the major airports Berlin Brandenburg BER (about 2 hours), Frankfurt am Main FRA, Köln/Bonn CGN, Munich MUC, or Prague PRG. All long-distance trains stop at Dresden Main Station (close to the city center) and Dresden Neustadt (the alternative arts, culture, and bar neighborhood).
Dresden Airport (DRS) is located 12 km north of the city center and well connected through tram line S2 to Dresden Main Station (20 minutes) and other stations, running frequently during the day.
Public Transport
Within the city, Dresden’s public transport offers trams, trains, buses, ferries, as well as bike services which make it possible to get around the city and its surroundings easily and inexpensively.
The conference venue at August-Bebel-Straße (ABS) is about 20 minutes from Dresden Main Station and well connected via bus (line 66) and tram (line 11). The closest stations to the conference’s main venue ABS are in walkable distance (from Weberplatz 4 minutes, from Strehlener Platz 8 minutes, from Lennéplatz 15 minutes). The closest stations to the German Hygiene Museum are Georg-Arnhold-Bad (tram lines 10 and 13) and Deutsches Hygiene-Museum (tram lines 1, 2, 4, 12).
Dresden’s public transport system is well established, affordable and operates well into the night. The transport service DVB operates all trams, buses, ferries, as well as some rental bike and car services in the city. Trains are generally operated by the Deutsche Bahn but accept tickets from the DVB within the city as well.
The DVB operates a mobile app service and several service points (e.g. at Dresden Main Station and Prager Straße) which allow visitors to buy single fares, groups fares, day tickets or one-week-passes. Tickets for the DVB can also be purchased through the app of the Deutsche Bahn. The rental bike service MOBIbike/Nextbike allows visitors and inhabitants alike to get around with rental bikes all over the city.
Currency & Payment
The currency in Germany is Euros €. It is advisable to carry some cash with you as some places don’t accept payments by card – ATMs can be found at the airport, the main station and throughout the city. Generally, it is possible to pay via Visa/Mastercard or credit card in most areas of the city.
National Park Saxon Switzerland (hiking)
(Sächsische Schweiz and Elbsandsteingebirge)
The National Park Saxon Switzerland with its iconic sandstone rocks and cliffside castle, famously explored by romanticist painters such as Caspar David Friedrich, is ideal for a day trip or hiking tour. Its most famous site—the Basteibrücke—is an easy 45 minute-train ride away from Dresden. Take S1 to Kurort Rathen and then cross the river with the ferry. For more on the national park, see:
