Entry Test for New University Entrants
All new university entrants who want to study English in this department must pass the Entry Test in order to be accepted for the following courses of study:
- Staatsexamen Lehramt
- Bachelor Anglistik/Amerikanistik
- Wirtschaftspädagogik,
- Beifach Anglistik/Amerikanistik in den Masterstudiengängen (Bachelor level)
Please note that to ensure equal and fair treatment of all applicants:
- all applicants (including those with long periods of residence abroad) must pass the Entry Test
- no other test results (e.g. Cambridge, TOEFL, IELTS) are accepted
- the Entry Test can only be taken in Dresden at the published times
In order to take an Entry Test, choose the earliest date which suits you (see the dates offered on our website under Für Studieninteressierte BA and Staatsexamen Lehramt) and reserve a place by writing to the e-mail address given. The date and exact will then be sent to you. We recommend that applicants take this test as early as possible so that they can make alternative plans if they do not pass the Entry Test.
Applications
Applicants must make two separate applications:
1. to the Immatrikulationsamt (or Auslandsamt in the case of foreigners) by filling the appropriate university application forms (http://tu-dresden.de/studium/organisation). Foreigners wanting to complete all their studies at the TU Dresden should contact the Auslandsamt (http://tu-dresden.de/internationales/int_stud/index_html).
2. to this department by applying for an Entry Test via email (details under: Für Studieninteressierte BA and Staatsexamen Lehramt).
The deadline for applying for (not taking!) the Entry Test is 15th July (exceptional cases: 15th September). The Entry Test can be taken on any of the dates offered and the certificate confirming a pass should be sent to the Immatrikulationsamt (or Auslandsamt in the case of foreigners) as soon as possible.
Entry Test Level
We expect an excellent command of English (i.e. near-native speaker standard) by the end of studies in our department. This can only be realistically achieved if students of English have good competence in written and spoken English at the beginning of their studies. The level of our Entry Test is oriented towards levels C1/B2 of the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages“. For more information, see: http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/linguistic/source/framework_en.pdf
Please note that in our Entry Test we lay great emphasis on a good command of English grammar (i.e. practical usage, not knowledge of rules) and that good communication skills alone will not guarantee a pass in this test. Should you want to prepare for this test, we recommend:
- “English Grammar In Use“ by Raymond Murphy (CUP)
- "New Headway English Course, Upper-Intermediate, Student's Book“ by Soars (OUP)
- “New Headway English Course, Upper-Intermediate, Workbook“ by Soars (OUP)
Entry Test Content
The Entry Test consists of a test via computer on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation - 80 minutes
A link to some test examples which will give you an idea of the level and type of questions you can expect are given on our website page under Für Studieninteressierte BA and Staatsexamen Lehramt.
Entry Test Results
Candidates who receive at least 65% are automatically accepted. Candidates who receive less than 65% will not be admitted to studies of English at the TU Dresden in the following semester.
Proof of passing the Entry Test is given in the form of a certificate, which is handed out immediately at the end of the test. This must be sent to the Immatrikulationsamt (or Auslandsamt in the case of foreigners) as soon as possible.
We recommend that students who fail the test but still want to begin studies of English in our department in a later year take steps to improve their English, e.g. live in an English-speaking country for six months or one year, or attend a language course (see: www.tudias.de ) at Upper-Intermediate level.
A pass in the Entry Test is valid for the coming academic year and the one following. If you do not pass the Entry Test, you may not take the test again in the same academic year.
