TikTok conference 2023

On March 30 and 31, 2023, the conference Memefication and Performance: Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Video Platform TikTok will take place at the Chair of Applied Linguistics.

The subject of the interdisciplinary conference is the video platform TikTok, which, as one of the most widely used social networks, has developed great social relevance and is playing an increasingly important role, especially in (non-)educational settings. The communicative practices and genres that can be observed on TikTok, in which current events and discourses are negotiated and staged in a performative manner typical of the platform, bring together the sign modalities of image, sound and language even more than other social media and thus open up new options for mediation, discursive appropriation and social representation. The fundamental affordances of the platform, in particular the possibility of producing new videos to existing sounds, favor a mode of staging and performance strongly characterized by intertextuality, intermediality and imitation, which, following recent research on digital (image) practices, can be described as memefication. The conference therefore examines how the multimodal media setting of TikTok in the field of tension between memefication and performance develops into a characteristic form of networked public sphere and which mediation options arise in various fields of practice.
