In Paris, the boundary between the city and the suburbs is clearly marked by the Périphérique, which Anne Weber’s narrator has hardly ever thought to cross. For what is there, in those notorious banlieues, besides a web of rail lines, expressways, and highways, between which warehouses, massive supermarkets, construction sites, and millions of people are squeezed? Besides the all-too-familiar hardship, violence, and poverty?
With subtle wit and keen observation, Anne Weber opens herself up to the unfamiliar and the “other” right in our midst, thereby sketching not only the portrait of a complex friendship but also the story of a multifaceted society.
Anne Weber, born in Offenbach in 1964, has lived in Paris as a freelance author and translator since 1983. She has received numerous awards, including the 2020 German Book Prize for *Annette, ein Heldinnenepos*.
Her book *Bannmeilen* was published in 2024 by Matthes & Seitz Berlin.
