Laetitia, the protagonist of Hélène Laurain’s debut novel *Bis alles brennt*, was born thirty-seven minutes before the Chernobyl explosion. She is horrified by the plan to bury radioactive waste from France, Germany, and Luxembourg in her home region of Lorraine. Laurain tells a gripping story of the desires, hopes, and fears of a generation that believes the fight against climate change is lost—yet chooses to become activists nonetheless.
Hélène Laurain, born in Metz in 1988, studied political science and Arabic in France and Germany, as well as creative writing at the Université Paris VIII.
She lives with her family in eastern France and works as a translator. *Bis alles brennt* (Voland & Quist 2024, translated from the French by Isabel Kupski) is her first novel.
