The Leipzig-based publisher akono is releasing the novel *Vertraulichkeiten* ( translated by Katharina Triebner-Cabald) by the Francophone author Max Lobe (French title: *Confidences*).
In it, the writer returns to his homeland of Cameroon and travels to the Bassa Forest to learn from the elderly Mâ Maliga what she knows about the independence movement in Cameroon and its leader, Ruben Um Nyobè.
*Vertraulichkeiten* is the story told by this talkative and mischievous woman, who experienced the resistance against colonial rule firsthand. As she tells her story, she doesn’t forget to drink palm wine and let her listener taste some as well.
In a blend of light-hearted tipsiness and profound seriousness, we thus learn the history of Cameroon’s independence and its secret war.
Max Lobe, born in Douala in 1986, lives in Geneva as a novelist, poet, and cultural activist and is the author of five novels. Themes that run through his work include queerness, migration, and postcolonialism. Lobe is the founder of GenevAfrica, an organization dedicated to building cultural bridges between Swiss and sub-Saharan African authors.
