Dr. Torsten König: Global Romanticism? Cultural Studies Perspectives on the Painter Raden Saleh Between Indonesia, Paris, and Dresden
Poster on the occasion of the lecture “Global Romanticism? Cultural Studies Perspectives on the Painter Raden Saleh between Indonesia, Paris, and Dresden” by Dr. Torsten König on June 30, 2026, at TU Dresden.
How does Romanticism, as a European phenomenon, extend beyond Europe’s borders? Through what channels and in what forms do Romantic aesthetics, worldviews, and bodies of knowledge circulate among local and global stakeholders? What role does the colonial world order play in this context? Focusing on the painter Raden Saleh (1811–1880), whose artistic life unfolded between his native Indonesia and various European locations such as Dresden and Paris, the lecture explored these questions.
As part of the lecture series “Upheaval and New Beginnings: Romanticism Born of the Spirit of Revolution? ” by Bettina Lindorfer.
