A German-French Dialogue
Poster on the occasion of the discussion and book presentation “From arch-enemies to good neighbors: A German-French Dialogue” with Hélène Miard-Delacroix and Andreas Wirsching on June 8, 2022, at the Central Library of the Dresden Municipal Libraries.
February 2022 marked the 30th anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty. In light of this and this year’s presidential election in France, we took a closer look at German-French relations. From today’s perspective, it seems almost unimaginable that the two countries repeatedly clashed in brutal conflicts, such as the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71 or World War I and World War II. Thanks to the efforts of countless people on both sides, the two nations forged friendly relations after 1945. Not least, the history of Franco-German relations is a history of political partnerships—from Helmut Kohl and François Mitterrand to Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron.
Drawing on their jointly published book *From Arch-Enemies to Good Neighbors: A German-French Dialogue” (Reclam 2019), French historian Hélène Miard-Delacroix, who teaches at the Sorbonne in Paris, and her German colleague Andreas Wirsching, director of the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich - Berlin, the eventful history of a unique neighborly relationship and discussed how important an understanding of their shared past is for Franco-German cooperation in the EU of the 21st century.
