Mental Boundaries – Mental Maps and Perceptual Realities in Francophone Border Regions (VARIPOL Project)
The VARIPOL project (Linguistic VARIeties and POLitical Boundaries in the French-speaking World), presented in this lecture, examines how political national and provincial borders function as cognitive filters and structure speakers’ mental maps. Based on preliminary findings from field research conducted in the French-Swiss border region, subjective representations are compared with the actual linguistic patterns in speech.
