Lecture by Dr. Torsten König (Dresden): Global Romanticism? Cultural Studies Perspectives on the Painter Raden Saleh: Between Indonesia, Paris, and Dresden
Poster on the occasion of the lecture “Global Romanticism? Cultural Studies Perspectives on the Painter Raden Saleh between Indonesia, Paris, and Dresden” by Dr. Torsten König on June 30, 2026, at TU Dresden.
How does Romanticism, as a European phenomenon, extend its influence beyond Europe’s borders? Through what channels and in what forms do Romantic aesthetics, worldviews, and bodies of knowledge circulate among local and global actors? What role does the colonial world order play in this context? Drawing on the example of the painter Raden Saleh (1811–1880), whose artistic life unfolded between his Indonesian homeland and various European locations such as Dresden and Paris, this lecture explores these questions.
As part of the lecture series Upheaval and New Beginnings: Romanticism Born of the Spirit of Revolution? by Bettina Lindorfer. Guests are warmly welcome.
