Alumni portraits
In order to give you an understanding of the wide range of career opportunities offered by a degree in Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies, we would like to introduce you to some alumni of the SLK Faculty.
Katja Kipping
was a Dresden city councillor at the age of 21 and chairwoman of the Left Party at 34. The Slavicist could imagine becoming a professor. "But until now, politics has always called," says the 41-year-old native of Dresden.
Ezé - Ezchial Wendtoin Nikiema
is an award-winning German studies graduate, passionate musician, likeable bridge-builder between cultures and, coming from Burkina Faso, is also one of TU Dresden's DAAD prizewinners. His current project: a school for Burkina Faso.
Youmna Fouad
after completing her Bachelor's degree in German Studies in Cairo, decided to study for a Master's degree in German Studies with a focus on 'German as a foreign language' at TU Dresden. She is now doing her doctorate here on invective codings of interculturality. She has also been a Marwa El Sherbini scholarship holder since 2017 and regularly gives lectures on Arabic culture and the role of women in Islam. She is one of the faces of the TU campaign "UNSERE UNI".
Anne Müller-Schuchardt
studied Linguistics at the TUD and, after some time in corporate communications, now works as a Public Relations Advisor for the German Foundation for Sick Newborns.
Sylva-Michèle Sternkopf
studied English, American and German language and literature at the SLK faculty and actually wanted to become a teacher, but had doubts about the profession and is now independently successful with an internationally oriented advertising and translation agency instead. Rather by chance, she has also launched an erotic wooden angel collection with her family.
Maria Völzer
left TU Dresden with degrees in German, Romance and Communication Studies to work as a DAAD lecturer in Russia. She has since returned, however, and works as the coordinator of the Cultural Office at the TUD's International Office.
André Eckardt
developed his enthusiasm for animated films during his studies of English and American Studies in Dresden and Brighton. He eventually turned this into a profession and became managing director of the German Institute for Animated Film.
Thi Thu Thao Nguyen
studied German and Romance Studies at the SLK faculty and still can't quite tear herself away from the university. In Hanoi, where she works as an assistant to the principal of the Olympia Schools, she is a regional ambassador for TUD and offers practical help and support to academics, students and alumni who are interested in a stay in Vietnam.
Maria Rodriguez Elizondo
decided to study to become a teacher at the TU Dresden and studied German and Spanish, before completing a master's degree in German and Romance studies. She now works as a trainer in South America for "kulturweit", the voluntary service of the Federal Foreign Office and the German Unesco Commission.
Anja Centeno García
was already a working mother when she decided to study German as a Foreign Language and Romance Studies at the SLK faculty alongside her job. After graduating, she decided to work mainly as a freelance lecturer, coach and communication trainer, giving courses at the TUD as part of the university didactics program.
Nikolai Press
moved abroad after studying English and History. In London, chance led him to a job in the insurance industry, where he is a typical career changer. Nevertheless, he remains loyal to the TUD - he is also a regional ambassador and supports students, staff and lecturers with contacts and helpful tips for their stay in London and the UK.
Kirsten Balbig
studied Linguistics, Literature and Musicology at the TU Dresden. After traveling extensively during and after her studies, she has now settled in Dresden, where she works primarily as an actress and musician, but also occasionally works at the adult education center and has made a name for herself as a storyteller.
