Exhibition Walter Trier
WALTER TRIER and the world of children's pictures |
Exhibition
June 18 to July 16, 2004 in the foyer of the SLUB
Walter Trier is one of the outstanding illustrators of the first half of the 20th century. Today, his fame is probably based first and foremost on his illustrations for Erich Kästner's novels, above all Emil and the Detectives (1929). By this time, however, Trier had already established himself as a press illustrator, successful book artist and, from the time of the First World War, also as an illustrator of children's books. His children's book illustrations always model a different world than the one Trier had to experience during both wars. In it, one can orient oneself with a loss of freedom and a sense of justice, it offers clarity, warmth and friendship.
The exhibition traces Trier's life from his childhood in Prague to his death in Canada after fleeing and emigrating, and the most beautiful and interesting of his numerous children's books will be on display, testifying to the unmistakability and diversity of Trier's pictorial language.
