Comparative Life Cycle Assessment for strengthenning of concrete structures with Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC)
Table of contents
A comparative life cycle assessment was conducted for a textile-reinforced concrete strengthening system by comparing a traditional 8 cm thick layer of steel reinforced shotcrete with a 1.5 cm textile reinforced concrete layer having the same bearing capacity. As system boundary, we chose the whole life cycle and set a 1m2 ceiling to be strengthend as the functional unit. The analysis shows the positive effects of less material consumption and less transportation weight of TRC. However, for the cumulative energy demand, both systems are more or less equivalent. The reason here is the energy intensity of the carbon fibre production and a very conservative design of the TRC-strengthening layer. Therefore, there is still optimisation potential concerning an energy efficient carbon fibre production and a better use of the bearing capacity of carbon fibres in concrete.
