Biography
Markus Scholz is Professor of Business Management, especially Responsible Management, at the Technical University Dresden (TU Dresden).
His research focuses on "Innovation and Transformation", "Strategic Management" and "Business Ethics" (especially "Business and Human Rights" and "Corporate Political Activity and Responsibility"). The contexts of his conceptual and empirical research include multinational corporations, family businesses, governmental and non-governmental organisations.
Following his studies in business management, economics and philosophy at the Leibniz University Hannover and the London School of Economics and Political Science, his academic positions have included teaching and research at the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science at the London School of Economics and the Zicklin Center for Business Ethics Research at the Wharton Business School.
He founded and headed the Institute for Business Ethics and Sustainable Strategy (IBES) at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and the Josef Ressel Centre for Collective Action and Responsible Management (CARe), funded by the Christian Doppler Society. Professor Scholz also held the position of European Chair of the Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MOC) network organised by the Harvard Business School.
In addition to his position at TU Dresden, he is also a Visiting Scholar and Adjunct Professor at INSEAD since 2018.
His research has been published in leading international journals such as Business Ethics Quarterly, Business & Society, California Management Review, Journal of Business Ethics, MIT Sloan Management Review, Organization Studies, Organization Theory, The British Journal for Philosophy of Science.
Furthermore, his research and expertise are regularly featured in the international media, including ARD, ARTE, Die Presse, Der Standard, Die Zeit, FAZ, Forbes, Handeslblatt, NZZ, ORF, Spiegel Online, and Wirtschaftswoche.
In addition to his academic activities, Prof. Scholz has served on advisory boards for various national and international business firms as well as for non-profit organizations. Since 2022, he has served as the scientific coordinator for the Schmalenbach Society's working group on Business Ethics.
Besides his academic work, Professor Scholz advises public institutions and corporations on business strategy, CSR, responsible management, transformation and sustainability, and is a frequent keynote speaker and trainer.
