Environmental Law

Learning Objectives

Students are familiar with the fundamentals of civil law and are able to apply generally applicable legal provisions. They understand the fundamental legal principles of environmental law (the precautionary principle, the polluter-pays principle, the principle of shared responsibility, the principle of cooperation, and the principle of subsidiarity) and are familiar with the sources of law and levels of regulation (international environmental law, EU law, and environmental law at the federal, state, and local levels). Students are familiar with international agreements related to biodiversity. They are able to apply nature conservation regulations governing interventions and compensatory measures. They are also familiar with the basic principles for determining whether an environmental project requires a permit or an EIA. They are able to independently conduct or participate in permitting and EIA procedures. Students possess knowledge of the legally compliant handling of hazardous substances and the European chemicals policy REACH; on this basis, students can create hazardous substance inventories and protection-level-based workplace analyses (in accordance with the Hazardous Substances Ordinance [GefStoffV]). Students are able to formulate and evaluate operating instructions, develop and maintain waste disposal plans and documentation, and are competent to make decisions on environmental law issues.
