Young female engineers who have created a social value for society with the results of their dissertations can be nominated by their scientific institutions as winners of the Bertha Benz Award. The prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, is awarded annually and honors - in the name of Bertha Benz - pioneering spirit, courage and visionary character. In 1888, the prominent founder of the prize and her two sons took the first long-distance trip in an automobile designed by Carl Benz.
