The Faculty of Computer Science welcomes Prof. Simon Razniewski
We are delighted to welcome Prof. Simon Razniewski, one of our former graduates, to the Chair of Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence on June 1.
Simon Razniewski completed his degree in Computer Science here in 2010. He completed his doctorate in 2014 at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano on the topic of “Query-driven Data Completeness Management”, where he subsequently worked as a junior professor (RTD) for Big Data Quality until 2017. In 2017, he moved to the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken and took over the research area “Knowledge Base Construction and Curation” as Senior Researcher. Since 2023, Simon Razniewski has been conducting research in the field of natural language processing and neurosymbolic AI at the Bosch Center for AI in Renningen. His research focuses on language models, knowledge bases, information extraction and commonsense knowledge.
The Professorship for Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence is one of the four newly appointed strategic professorships at the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig). Her research focuses on knowledge-based, neurosymbolic methods of artificial intelligence and their application in intelligent systems. These include declarative problem solving, logical reasoning, algorithmic search and optimization, machine learning on structured data and heuristic methods.
Simon Razniewski: "With the recent fanfare around language models like GPT-4, I am really excited to join TUD and ScaDS.AI as professor for knowledge-based AI, and to research, teach, and collaborate on projects around the potentials and challenges of such technology. With its wider relevance for society, I am especially curious to learn about and support research and applications beyond the core computer science field. 14 years after graduating from TUD, I am also personally thrilled to return to my alma mater and hometown."
His hobbies of gliding (long ago 1. Bundesliga with the Aeroclub Pirna) and paragliding are currently on pause, while he spends most of his free time with and marvels at the (self-) training of two 4- and 2-year old language models.
We wish Prof. Simon Razniewski every success for all his projects!
