TU Dresden and Dresden-Gorbitz secondary school work together to get pupils interested in STEM subjects at an early age
In close partnership with Gymnasium Dresden-Gorbitz secondary school, TU Dresden (TUD) has developed the cooperation forum "GorbitzDialog," which brings together school, science, business and the local community. The project aims to promote interest in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in a socially diverse way irrespective of age, thereby countering the shortage of skilled workers in the long term. Twice a year, the Dresden-Gorbitz secondary school opens its doors to visitors to discuss topics from its profile lessons.
The dialogue focuses on student projects that offer an insight into the current state of the art by incorporating related areas of research and work from science and industry. The forum deliberately encourages discussion of specialist issues and relevant cross-sectional topics. The next "GorbitzDialogue" is planned for March 20, 2024. The topic of the day will then be biodiversity, a subject that a group of students have been working on intensively, including building an insect hotel and creating a flowering meadow. Researchers from TU Dresden will support the students in placing the topic in a global context – but always with reference to the work of the secondary school students.
Gymnasium Dresden-Gorbitz, which was recently awarded the "STEM-friendly school" seal, has been TU Dresden's ninth partner school since June 2023. The partnership with individual schools is characterized in particular by the promotion of (STEM) educational activities, access to extracurricular learning venues and scientific projects, providing guidance in choosing a career and degree program, and the qualification of teachers.
