Ultra-fast network empowering research at TU Dresden: TU Dresden sets up private 5G network across the entire campus
Researchers at TU Dresden are now able to access an ultra-fast and state-of-the-art 5G network.
TU Dresden has set up a private 5G network across the main campus, marking a significant and cutting-edge technological step forward. The project, led by TU Dresden's 6G-life research centre, aims to support researchers in the development of innovative applications in various fields, from industry to healthcare.
Following a competitive tendering process, the TU Dresden spin-off CampusGenius was awarded the contract to set up five locations on the main campus in 2023. The infrastructure will later also be set up at the TU Munich. The private mobile network operates in the n78 frequency band (3.7-3.8 GHz) and is equipped with eleven antennas and over 100 connected modems. CampusGenius manages the network with its proprietary 5G core, the GeniusCore.
Looking to the future, TU Dresden is entering the second phase of network expansion and is working together with CampusGenius on the integration of mmWave technology, which allows 5G data transmissions at Gbit/s speeds. This further development will open up new possibilities for researchers and enable the use of FR2 technology for Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC) applications.
The new 5G network is part of TU Dresden's strategic commitment to creating an environment in which cutting-edge research and development can thrive. By combining private 5G and mmWave technology, the university is positioning itself as a leader in driving advances in the digital landscape and ushering in a new era of connectivity and technological innovation.
