Scientists from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering as guests on the podcast "Signals for Life"
Dr. Martin Schmidt and his colleagues Matthieu Scherpf and Alexander Hammer from TU Dresden were interviewed for the podcast of the German Society for Biomedical Engineering in the VDE "Signals for Life". The result is four episodes on the topics of doctorates, spin-off projects and science communication at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. The first episode was released on September 6.
The first podcast episode entitled #49 KomVital & ecgXfusion: Doctorate and what comes next? explores the question of how students actually decide to pursue a doctorate. Doctoral students Matthieu Scherpf and Alexander Hammer from the Biosignal Processing research group talk about their beginnings in research and take listeners on a journey into their doctoral topics. They address the questions of how topics develop and what support you get as a doctoral student. Their supervisor Dr. Martin Schmidt reports on the process and funding of a doctorate as well as the particular challenges involved in shaping the future. The fact is: Not all doctoral students stay at the university after their doctorate and habilitate, like Martin Schmidt. Some go into industry, others set up their own company - like Matthieu Scherpf and Alexander Hammer. As a result, the three scientists continue to work on medical product ideas relating to atrial fibrillation and ECGs: what if AI could explain to doctors in the future how and why they came to specific diagnoses? Camera-based photoplethysmography, which will enable people to record their vital data at a low threshold in the future, is also the subject of the podcast.
In the second podcast episode, which is expected to be released on September 20, 2024, Matthieu Scherpf and Alexander Hammer present their spin-off projects KOMVITAL (convenient health monitoring using a smartphone app) and ecgXfusion (trustworthy diagnostic support using artificial intelligence).
In episode 51 of "Signals for Life", the researchers talk about science communication and how important it is to bring science to the general public. Two exhibits from the working group will also be presented as part of the science exhibition "Dr. Zukunft - Medizintechnik aus der Dresdner Wissenschaft", which will be on display at the COSMO Science Forum from October 1, 2024 to February 28, 2025.
The Night of Biosignals, which will take place in various cities across Germany on November 15, 2024, will be the theme of the 52nd edition. For Saxony and Dresden, it is being organized by the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and will take place at the Fetscherforum.
