Registration: Please pre-register bindingly to the course via OPAL until 18 October 2024, so that we get an overview of interests in the course! The course starts on Thursday, 17 October 2024, and the first seminar will give an introduction on the Oberseminar course as well as an overview about its content, structure and conditions. All interested students are welcome to participate this Introduction seminar. The regstration will be closed afterwards. We will select 10 participants for the course (with priority on EE diploma students) and confirm the selection to them.
The selected participants are asked to check if a registration to the module in HISQIS/SELMA is required in addtion. Finally, to obtain the course grade, each participant has to register to the course assessment separately during the registration period (diploma students in HISQIS, Master students in examinations office)!

Course objectives and scope: In this course you will learn about the technical aspects related to the design of analog circuits and being capable of solving a given task independently and individually. In addition, you will master to document, publish, present and discuss your work to foster your scientific and project-based working methods. The course consists of:
- Around five weeks of tutorials (one per week) at the beginning of semester
- A practical work in which you will design a circuit using LTspice®, which is a freeware circuit simulator widely-used in the industry and can be easily installed on your laptop or PC
- You will deliver a final written report about the topic of your practical circuit design work in the form of a scientific publication
- You will make a presentation (~20 min) about your practical work
The module assessement and grade consists of the report (2/3) and the presentaion (1/3). There will be no written exam.
Tutotial contents:
- Introduction to the topics of audio amplifiers, dc/dc converters and RFID energy harvesting circuits
- Introduction to the LTSpice® circuit design and simulation software
- Different types/frequency-responses/materials/applications of commercially existing capacitors, diodes, etc.
- Examples of different commercially-available op-amp ICs; and designing circuits with them
- Pulse circuits, switching power converters, and rectifier circuits
- Examples of widely-used signal transistors and power transistors, their electrical characteristics and datasheets
- How to write a scientific publication and how to present the research results
Topics for practical works: You will choose one topic from the options below. Please contact the supervisors if you like to suggest an own topic. The specific tasks will be provied during the course.
- Design of an audio filter and amplifier for compensating the imperfections in the frequency response of a piezoelectric loudspeaker
- Design of a RFID energy harvesting circuit, including a coil and a rectifier circuit, for AC/DC energy conversion from a magnetic field
- Design of an energy-efficient switching DC/DC converter
