Welcome to the SPIE+OPTICA Student Chapter Dresden
This is the webpage of the SPIE+OPTICA Student Chapter Dresden founded in 2016 as a SPIE Student Chapter and expanded in 2022 to be also an OPTICA Student Chapter.
Upcoming Events
We are pleased to announce Prof. Dr. Igor Meglinsky will give a talk in our student chapter on 22th May 2:00pm. The talk will present insights on
"Orbital angular momentum in scattering media".
Igor Meglinski is a Professor in Biomedical Engineering and Biophotonics at the School of Engineering & Applied Science and the School of Life & Health Sciences at Aston University (UK).
His research interests lie at the interface between physics, biomedical engineering, medicine and life sciences, focusing on the development of new non-invasive imaging/diagnostic techniques and their application in medicine & biology, material sciences, pharmacy, food, environmental monitoring, and health care industries.
For attendance, please contact us.
See you then!
We are pleased to announce Assist. Prof. Gavrielle Untracht will give a talk in our student chapter on 27th May 1:00pm. The talk will be about
"Light tissue interaction for optical imaging towards translational imaging tools".
Dr. Gavrielle Untracht is a postdoctoral researcher in the Biophotonic Imaging Group at the Technical University of Denmark.
Her research focuses on exploring light tissue interactions to improve optical imaging towards the development of translational imaging tools. She is driven by the opportunity to make a difference by revolutionizing medical diagnostics.
For attendance, please contact us.
See you then!
We are pleased to announce Dr. Isabelle Allegro will give a talk in our student chapter on 3rd June 12:00pm. The talk will be about
"Transitioning from academia into industry + Career Q&A".
Isabel Allegro is a Product Manager in the Semiconductor Division at Jenoptik Optical Systems GmbH, a leading provider of customized optical and micro-optical systems, modules and components.
Her work is focussed on micro-optical components and she brings a strong background in optics and photonics.
For attendance, please contact us.
See you then!
We will be visiting laser manufacturer COHERENT at it's facilities in Lübeck and further get insights to the department of optical coherence tomography from lab supplier THORLABS-OCT. Both are located closeby in the beautiful city of Lübeck.
If you want to join, feel free to contact us.
Activities
We are pleased Dr. An Pan gave a talk in our student chapter on 15th April 9:30am. His inspiring talk about "Fourier ptychographic microscopy and its applications in pathology and remote imaging" provided great insights and initiated a fruitful discussion. We thank Dr. An Pan for presenting within our chapter.
Dr. An Pan is an associate professor and a principal investigator at Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China, and the head of Pioneering Interdiscipline Center (PIC), State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics.
New year, events,
In our first kick-off event this year we got together and talked about the next scheduled events and discussed further ideas. Besides two company excursions and several guest speakers, we brainstormed on a possible workshop event.
Stay tuned.
... we were part of it.
On 14th of June we represented our student chapter to visitors, pupils and families and introduced optics and photonics. As a kind of landing-booth at tha faculties main building we perfectly catched the visitors interest introducing multiple easy to understand and children friendly experiments. The most interesting one showed optical spectroscopy for the analysis of light sources and fluid probes by using beatiful rainbow-like spectrogramms.

We thank all the visitors for their interest at our booth at the long night of science 2024.
On 22nd of May our chapter visited the optical components manufacturing company Thorlabs located in Bergkirchen, Germany. After a warm welcome in the city of Munich, we had the privilege to get an insight on the company. With that intro we discussed scientific device topics as well as their development, manufacturing and of course also the well-known packaging together with Lab-Snacks.
We thank the company Thorlabs for that well-organized and interesting day highlighted with some merchandise at the networking on the rooftop of Bergkirchen.
On 15th of April we had the pleasure of Prof. Charles Lin from the Harvard Medical School visiting our Student Chapter. His research focusses on minimally invasive optical technologies for in-vivo imaging and monitoring of cells and tissues. In our seminar, he presented his work on "In-flow cytometry: blood cell analysis without drawing blood".
